Part of the Glyn Academies Trust

Here at Hillcroft, our Reception year is the start to the children’s chapter of their primary education if they have not attended our Nusery. Our curriculum is built using the Early Years Foundation Stage which is the statutory curriculum for children 0-5. For us, the EYFS covers our Nursery and Reception classes. Our curriculum challenges children, encouraging them to develop into independent, motivated learners who are curious about the world around them. Our children are nurtured within a secure environment, whilst being allowed to explore, enquire and take risks both inside and outside of the classroom.

The Early Years curriculum is based on seven areas of learning;

The Prime Areas:

  • Personal, social and emotional development,
  • Physical development,
  • Communication and language

The specific areas:

  • Mathematics
  • Literacy
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design.

We always encourage parental involvement in the children’s learning and welcome knowing what the children achieve at home. As a way of sharing this from home to school, we ask parents to complete magic moment cards (link below) which are shared and celebrated in school upon returning them.

It is essential that the transition into Reception is a smooth and successful one. We, therefore, offer two one hour stay and play sessions in June, a longer session on the school induction day in July and then a home visit in September, before they start school. This allows the child to become increasingly familiar with the school, the environment and the Early Years staff team before starting in September.
